Secret Games [VHS]

The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games, and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blond adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source--but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle.

Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobite and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilization at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs, and pointed jaws. The result is a film that will appeal more to 10-year-old boys than to family audiences.

Suitable for ages 8 and up: violence, scary imagery, tobacco use, and a difficult-to-follow story. --Charles Solomon

The Wizard

The WizardLess raunchy than Tommy and more conventional than Tron, The Wizard also revolves around gaming. There's even a Bridges on board. In Tron it was Jeff, in The Wizard it's Beau. As opposed to the rock opera's pinball-playing "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," however, quasi-catatonic Jimmy (Luke Edwards) is a video game wiz. While the nine-year-old lives with his mother, half-brothers Corey (Fred Savage, circa The Wonder Years) and Nick (Christian Slater, fresh from Heathers) live with their father, Sam (Bridges). When Jimmy, who recently lost his sister, is placed in a home, Corey busts him out for a trip to California. (Today, Jimmy's condition would be labeled post-traumatic stress disorder.) As they're leaving Utah, they join forces with gaming enthusiast Haley (Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis), who suggests LA's National Video Game Championships. So, off they go by foot, skateboard, and the kindness of strangers. Sam, Nick, and obnoxious bounty hunter Putnam (Will Seltzer) are close behind. The outcome may be a foregone conclusion--the fractured family makes their peace--but The Wizard still offers a nostalgic, Nintendo-laden look at 1980s gamer culture (Power Glove, Super Mario Bros. 3, etc.). Plus, sharp-eyed viewers will spot Toby Maguire milling around before the showdown at Universal Studios Theme Park. If not for the hitchhiking, gambling, and reckless automotive destruction--after Putnam takes a knife to Sam's tires, Sam smashes his headlights with a shovel--the movie would be appropriate for all ages. In other words, it earns its PG rating. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Oh! Gravity.

With Oh! Gravity, the San Diego-based modern rock act delivers their best album in years, one that fully reconciles their (Christian) faith with their (considerable) talent. It's diverse but not overly so, and while the production work of veteran Tim Palmer (U2, Tears for Fears) helps provide a radio-friendly sheen atop everything, it's actually their least compromised/mainstream sounding record since the group left the indie scene. From the chiming, revved-up, anthemic title song, which pairs compressed vocals with distorted guitars, to the moody and mildly schizophrenic single "Dirty Second Hands," this album is loud and dirty, the lyrics are thoughtful and plaintive. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Foreman clearly questions the meaning of the band's success, and the role they play in the scheme of things: "Like a puppet on a monetary string/Maybe we've been caught singing/Red, white, blue, and green/But that ain't my American dream." If only Switchfoot's conscience could be implanted in the bodies of other modern rock acts! The world might not necessarily be a better place, but the radio certainly would be. --Mike McGonigal

Is "Pokemon" a "Teaching" Video Game?

How can Pokemon be a "teaching" video game?

The Pokemon phenomenon, if you've deliberately ducked your head under the cutesy "Pikachu" and his hundreds of friends, was created by Satoshi Tajiri for the Nintendo Gameboy back in the late '90s. The game features kid-friendly mechanics, lots of cute animal-monster hybrids, and the basic structure of a Japanese RPG, wherein players use an alternating "Player goes first, Computer goes second" combat phase to resolve "battles." Gamers use each player's, or in this case, Pokemon's, skills to attack, defend, and use items. Also typical of the Japanese-style role-playing game: a regular, identifiable protagonist - usually a young male - is thrust into extraordinary circumstances and must fight to save the world or gain notoriety.

The system is simple, but deep; players can spend hundreds of hours refining, "leveling-up," and training their Pokemon to become nearly invulnerable.

The game has been blessed with tacit approval from most parents; cartoony "fantasy" violence is acted out by crude avatars with limited animation. These avatars, the screen representation of the various Pokemon the gamers collect, range from pink blobs to fearsome insectoids to giant dragons. When a random or "scripted" meeting occurs, two avatars do battle. They face off on-screen, "attacks" or "skills" are represented by crude, limited animations. For example, an attack like "bite" never shows the player's Pokemon biting the other; rather, an animation of teeth appears over the rival Pokemon and the opponent's "health" bar is reduced. Explicit violence is very limited.

What the game does well, however, is playing up to humanity's love for collecting things. You're exhorted to "Collect 'em All!" You learn early-on, in-game, of the near-limitless possibilities of the various Pokemon scattered throughout the game world. Depending on which version of the game you're playing, anywhere between 200 and 400 Pokemon to aggregate. Further randomizing the process, and (again) depending on which version's being played, each Pokemon has various attributes like "excitable" or "lazy" that have a direct effect on its performances when battling other monsters. More on this later.

Pokemon video game teaching evolution?

The game sports a high level of complexity at its core. It's set up to acclimatize players to the highest concepts; various NPCs (non-player characters) walk players through basic concepts up through the most difficult in-game ideas. You begin your Pokemon life wide-eyed and innocent; hours later, you're trading Pokemon online, buying special items, and leveling up your monsters with abandon.

Towards the endgame, players are encouraged to breed their Pokemon to create more powerful offspring. At that point, the Pokemons' characteristics (aggressive, lazy, boring, etc) apparently play a large part in their value. You want to "breed" your Pokemon to have battle-friendly characteristics. Furthermore, each Pokemon "evolves" or "grows up" into a more advanced version of itself.

Some people have a problem with this. Some groups claimed foul, claiming that the game was a back door into teaching children the concept of evolution. Christian groups, for instance, banned the game for its mostly incidental reference to evolution. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia banned Pokemon from its borders, claiming that it somehow promoted Zionism to children.

Despite the protests, 14 years later, Pokemon still prints money for Nintendo. Rather than produce the Pokemon "swag" itself, Nintendo licensed out the rights to nearly anyone who'd pony up the cash. Every time someone buys a movie, or a game, or a plush doll, or a keychain, Nintendo makes money. It was a savvy business decision that's still netting millions of dollars. The kids just eat it up.

So, is Pokemon a "teaching" video game?

The game does little to promote education or teach much of anything besides its in-game rules and rote memorization of its seemingly endless list of collectible monsters. Is it a "teaching" video game?

No, not really.

If you go out of your way to use the game as a fun, hands-on representation for something else, then sure - it's a learning video game. On the other hand, you can make that case for nearly any tangible object.

Really, the game's benign. It's the Saturday morning cartoon of video games: it doesn't harm your kids, but they could probably be doing something more productive with their time. Let your children have some fun, and mix in some learning video games that actually try to teach and entertain, rather than just entertain.

Verdict

If the kids are screaming for Pokemon, you might be better off just letting them scratch that itch. If you've the time, Pokemon could be used as a wishy-washy teaching video game, possibly as an introduction into the idea of evolution. But honestly, you'd have to go out of your way to make it a valuable lesson. It's harmless, if sometimes a little too compulsive, fun for youngsters.

Let 'em play, but watch to make sure they come up for air every now and again.

William is a parent and a New York straphanger. His kid is completely transfixed by his Pokemon game, and often takes a little "gentle encouragement" to play any of his teaching video games. He misses the days of Sonic and Mario when they'd only go from left-to-right, rather than 360 degrees.

Glorifying God, not Violence - Christian Video Games Score with Parents

In today's busy world, it's difficult for parents to screen everything that their children process, from television to music to movies to video games. Unfortunately, many of the video games in today's market are vulgar, violent and generally inappropriate for younger children. However, that doesn't stop even the youngest gamers from finding and playing them.

The seductive pull of the gaming world

Research indicates that children spend more time at the computer or in front of TV gaming consoles than they spend on any other form of entertainment. Studies estimate that kids between the ages of 8 and 18 are spending up to two hours a day playing video games.

Even if the time spent gaming is considerably less in your household, the engrossing nature of video games gets the full attention of your young player. If the message in the video games they play is violent and vulgar, it's going to quickly erode the values you've worked so hard to instill in your kids' lives.

How to satisfy gamers without sacrificing your family values

So what are the options for parents who want their kids to stay focused on uplifting images and a God-centered life? Many parents have simply turned off video games in their household. This is not a bad choice, but many kids, drawn to the forbidden fruit, will find a way to get their fix elsewhere. A better solution is offering them a Christian alternative.

Really good games with a really good message

At first glance it seems like the video game industry has nothing to offer young Christians, but a few media outlets have heard the frustrated call of parents and gamers alike. Christian entertainment makers are finally catching on to the video game craze and turning the gore- and sex-dominated entertainment genre inside out. Games like "Deliverance: Moses in the Pharaoh's Court" combine Bible-based messages with exciting game play and unparalleled graphics to grab the attention of kids and parents alike.

These new, gripping faith-based games not only uphold the values you strive to teach your kids, but also present Bible lessons in a compelling format. In fact, graphics-intensive, Bible-based video games have been known to impress even non-Christian players.

Where to find Christ-centered games your kids will love

Worthwhile Christian video games are bursting on the scene right now, but you may not find them in the mainstream gaming outlets that sell XBox and PS3 games. If you're looking for got-to-have Christian titles for your kids to enjoy, try searching for Christian-based game review sites online to uncover and purchase the perfect games.

Features to look for when choosing games

In combat games, look for arcade-style fighting, instead of bloody or deadly violence. Also, keep an eye on the game characters' dress and language to weed out sexual overtones and four-letter words. Finally, choose games that offer something educational or inspirational, instead of mindless button-mashing.

Your child will be influenced by the games they play. Make sure those games pull them in a direction you want them to grow by making the time to find out what faith-based games are available. Who knows? Maybe you'll even find one that you and your children can enjoy together.

West Creek Studios seeks to motivate & entertain children in a positive manner through the development of media products. We use animation and game play to tell stories that uplift and encourage children through our principle-centered storylines featuring characters of high moral integrity. WWE Judgment Day 2009 PPV Review

From Rosemont, Illinois. Original airdate: 5/17/09

Umaga d. CM Punk, Samoan Spike -- pin (***1/2).

So why is Umaga battling Pepsiman anyway? Anyways, hometown rule applies here as Punk does the job, though it was a really good opener otherwise with lots of nifty spots like G2S countered into a Samoan drop. I don't understand WWE's obsession having their talent ALWAYS lose in their hometown, unless you're Jim Ross, then you're embarassed on a grand scale.

ECW champion Christian d. Jack Swagger, handful of tights -- pin (***1/2).

I really enjoyed this match and loved when Christian jumped down from the top rope over Swagger and ran to the other side haha... classic Christian. End came when Swagger went for the gutwrench powerbomb, but Xian flipped out, went for the killswitch, as Swagger pulled away, then Xian did a rollup, with a handful of tights FTW and to further the feud. I guess Christian is the new dirtiest player in the game. Kind of a lame ending, though. Too bad Christian isn't "popular" enough to have a clean win.

Meanwhile, Edge and Chavo argue. Edge told Chavo to do something about the cross-dresser calling his aunt a pig. Edge is awesome and one of the best actors in WWE. He can make a mediocre promo amazing by the way he delivers it.

John Morrison d. Shelton Benjamin, Starship Pain -- pin (***).

Sadly Charlie Haas has dropped the impersonation gimmick. While I'm excited to see the World's Greatest Tag team reunited, The Great Charli > WGTT. Anyways, this was a good match, but it was missing something. Maybe it was the crowd; they didn't quite seem to be buying Nitro as a face. Anyhoo. great stuff at the end as both guys hit some beautiful spots and in the end Nitro wins with his flippy spinny indy move. Both these guys need more match time; they can put on a hell of a show.

Comedy segment saw The Miz straight up jack Alfonso Soriano at ringside and mentions Jannetty (which was a nice reference), bunch of Ducks, Chicago Cubs & SMH. Then bizarrely, Santino makes the save for Soriano and calls him The Fiz. Raw's two most hilarious wrestlers against one another? They should keep that going. A Miz-Santino feud would be priceless.

Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio d. Chris Jericho w/ short pants, 619 -- pin (***).

Jericho is getting stale, he should go back to his smarmy and arrogant ways like his WCW days. Anyways, Jericho throws Mysterio around the ring like a rag doll and Rey is soooo small compared to Jericho, I don't think Y2J could make this feud work because of it. Anyhoo, the match would have been average if Jericho hadn't done the promo with the 'guarantee' that there wouldn't be a 619; gave a story to the match. And I usually hate Mysterio matches, because they're so formulaic, but that was a good match, thanks to Jericho. Rey is a total shell of his former self, however. The announcers talk about how he's a "high-flyer" but he hardly does that anymore. He should retire so he can walk 10 years from now.

Flying Batista d. WWE champion Randy Orton w/ out hair, attacking the referee -- DQ (*1/2).

Finally, a toilet break match. Orton can be okay, but needs someone to help him, and that man is not Batista. Same goes for Batista. They just cancel each other out. Anyways, there was a sizable RKO chant and this was not a pro-DAVE crowd. This match just sucked the energy out of the show. Both of these guys are like video game characters. Repetitive moves, awkward animations, over excessive normal mapping, and occasionally victim to lag. If Orton's finishing move was a headlock, he'd win every match. End came when Orton deliberately got himself disqualified, attacking the referee in a cheap ending. Those kind of finishes just make you wonder why he didn't slap the referee two seconds into the match and leave. Post-match, Legacy came down to attack Big Dave, but a 90 year old man makes the save. Whoo. Dammit Flair, stay retired.

John Cena w/ odds to overcome d. The Big Show, Attitude Adjustment -- pin (*).

I love how Cena looks like he's about to cry when he's in that stare down. The Cena Sucks chant is way louder as it should be. And if I had a dollar for every time they said "No one evokes more emotion out of the WWE Universe than John Cena." and "The Worlds largest athlete." for this match alone I'd be able to buy the WWE 100 times over. And man, it's amazing how quickly and severely this PPV turned from possible PPV of the year to utter snooze fest. Anyhoo, in the end, Cena overcomes adversity and by God I am so inspired! Miracles do happen! Boring match, though. So if Cena is Superman, does that make having a good match with the Big Show his kryptonite?

World champion Edge d. Jeff Hardy, DDT off the top rope -- pin (***).

This has been a show where champions come out first. End came when Matt Hardy interfered and attacked Jeff, Cowboy Bob Orton-style with a cast on his arm. This was a good match going through until Matt Hardy came out. Judgment Day is then over and there's no Punk and no cashing in, just credits. I guess the hometown rule is still in effect. Still Edge is still the champion, so all is right with the world.

Man of the Night: Miz - he has certainly stepped his game up recently and I'm loving it. We've needed a "get under your skin" heel in the worst way; he's so annoying, and yet you cant stop watching because he takes trash talking to a whole new level

Death Threat of the Night: Flair - he should seriously just stay retired. I hope this is a one time thing, and he won't be back to wrestle.

Best Match of the Night: Xian v. Swagger - great match.

Worst Match of the Night: Cena v. Show - boring match.

Jobber of the Night: Punk losing two back to back PPVs. Guess CM Punk didn't drink his Pepsi Natural before the match.

Squash of the Night: So Legacy have been completely dismantled by a 39 year old non-wrestler and a 60 year old wrestler who retired. Nice writing, WWE. The only time I liked Legacy was when Orton kissed Stephanie as I didn't expect that. Otherwise Legacy have suffered from bad writing, bad promos, and horrible matches.

Blown Spot of the Night: Mysterio took what looked like a bad fall, although he looked ok afterwards, but for a second I thought he was a goner.

Surprise of the Night: Edge-Hardy going on last, and Punk not cashing-in.

Over Done: Matt Hardy run-in was unnecessary.

Homo-erotic Moment: Cole and Lawler acting surprised when Cena won; "He went for the impossible... and somehow he achieved it!" / "Fearless win!" / "Cena has made a believer out of a lot of people tonight!"

Screw the Smarks: No Punk, and a pointless Matt run-in. WWE is dragging some of these storylines out much too long.

Quotable Quotes: "That chair is always dangerous!" -- Michael Cole during the WWE title match.

Become Unbreakable Review

Become Unbreakable is another dating product dedicated to teach inner game development. It is created by Christian Hudson and Nick Sparks. Released on June 01, 2009 for a limited time under The Social Man, It is available in Audio and Video file downloads. Recently on January 14, 2010, Unbreakable launched another 800 limited copies.

It is basically a course intended to teach users on how to build up rock-solid and unbreakable confidence and game from the comforts of their homes. It accomplishes this by presenting advice that is capable of making you feel more confident than ever; evident through charming and compelling words and attitude. It is a product situated midway between beginner and advanced student levels.

Confidence is the key to a solid game, but can this product really help you make it unbreakable?

This is a concise Unbreakable Review and the answers lie within.

THE GOOD

The realistic and simple presentation of the Video on dating science and inner game is fantastic. It is easily understandable, and is transparent for prioritizing what you need to improve on in your current situation.

Simplicity is the most commendable thing about this product. Instead of using seduction community jargons, Hudson and Sparks actually made use of lay-man's terminology in their explanations. Sufficient examples and diagrams are provided as well, making the complex topics easy to grasp.

THE BAD

One negative thing that could be said about Unbreakable is that it gets overloaded with too many concepts and examples at times. Too much of a good thing tend to be bad in the end. Too much technicality in the product makes it somewhat unorganized.

The DVD is also based on a lot of existing dating advice. If you are an avid learner of the game, you will find nothing new from this product.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Basically, Unbreakable is a great foundation builder for beginners. It has everything one could need when starting to learn how to play the game and how to gain confidence. For men who love to scrutinize and learn a ton of advice at the same time, this product is for you. Over all, this is a great product; jargon-free and easily understandable for beginners and advanced students alike.

To learn more about the Unbreakable with more in depth editor and user reviews check out the full Unbreakable review on DatingSkillsReviewcom.

An in depth Unbreakable Review discusses each part of the Video and its most important advantages and disadvantages to men studying to improve their performance in how to approach and attract women with unbreakable confidence and game.

Computerized Christians? Get Ready for the New Church!

Isaiah 43;19 declares: "Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."

A new thing? Try this one on for size: Just as the Apostle Paul brought the Good News to the Greeks, today's latch key kids will bring it to the GEEKS!

Here's what I mean. Does anybody remember those radical Jesus Freaks of the 60s and 70s? They're still around. They became the pot-bellied Baby-Boomers we know and love today. These people seem to have become more conservative with age (having children of one's own will cause that transformation). After all, many who were once yesterday's liberals are today's conservatives. They scorn the vulgar videos and movies of today's youth and turn in disgust from the their nasty grunge clothes, pierced noses, and tattoos. These Boomers can't stand the in-yo-face vulgarity and arrogance of today's young no-commitment "slackers."

To you pastors out there, I hate to break it to you, but these kids are the new recruits. These young people ARE the new Church. I call them the Omega Warriors.

Together, we Boomers must get over something that is much more than a generation gap. It's the most paradigm of paradigm shifts because there is a total misunderstanding of these newbies on the part of today's "organized Church." The Boomers must come to recognize the hidden sorrows faced by today's "latch-key" kids . . . the heart-rending despair of their broken homes and the poor parental skills under which they were subjected as we've together discovered that TV makes a terrible surrogate parent. This is the stuff of their lives that makes them "act that way."

Christians, gone are the days of the "one-talking-to-many" mediums, the talking heads of today's Baby-Boomer Christianity. We are entering a one-to-one digital medium. These kids want to interact. They desire interdependency. They want to collaborate and dialogue with others. Common interests are drawing these kids into common communities. One quick glance at their Internet chat rooms makes this extremely evident. They'll discuss anything. They WANT to commune.

SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING

Can we discern the spiritual side of all the apparent nonsense they force us to deal with? What can God do with so big a mess? Consider that the idea of connecting to one another in another space is inherently spiritual. The notion of a "covenant network" of allied individuals is certainly Christian. And, perhaps for the first time in human history, the Body of Christ can be perceived as being truly global, totally possible, and walking in more agreement than we ever imagined. How is this being made possible? By way of the Internet.

Nobody's better at negotiating The 'Net than today's youth.

"It is important to fulfill the great commission by getting the saving Gospel message to the people who need it most," claims Mark Harpt, President of the World Wide Christian Web. He continues, "The amount of ignorance about the truth of God is staggering, especially in countries that produce the greatest technological advances. These people need God and wireless Internet technology is a great way to let them know that the God who created the universe wants to enter into a special relationship with them if they will allow it."

Sadly, many of today's Church leaders - some of whom were yesterday's radical Jesus Freaks - have largely missed what is happening right under their noses because they see the lowly computer as nothing more than a glorified office machine at best, a tool of the devil at worst. True, the predictions regarding the information highway may seem like so much hype today, but the wise Christian leader will prayerfully consider its impact in regard to tomorrow. Though computers may hardly seem to be of any significance where the future of the Church is concerned, the way the Church utilizes this tool may totally change Christianity on planet Earth as we know it. I can attest that it has totally revolutionized my own personal ministry as I'd rather broadcast the Word of God to millions with the click of a button than preach to a group of 12 or so. When I DO minister to live human beings, I ALWAYS return with a list of email addresses.

The new millennium is a watershed moment in Church history. The Internet will soon impact the growth of the Church at a staggering rate and at a global level. The question is, will YOU be part of it? Some may say, "We're miles ahead of the game at First Church! We have our own website...." Wrong! Again, for anyone to find that website, THEY must be looking for YOU.

The Church MUST make every effort to go to THEM!

SPIRITUAL CONSUMERS OR SPIRITUAL PRODUCERS?

Last Wednesday night, I was almost late for my Coffee Studio Bible study. Why? I saw a commercial for NBC's Dateline with Stone Phillips in which a ministry team was performing an exorcism in a condo in North Carolina. Yes, we taped it for later but we watched it, too. When I finally joined the Coffee Studio group, some had been watching the same program there and had caught the show as well. Early in the program, Phillips made the statement, "As many as 10,000 exorcisms take place annually in the USA, most by evangelical Christians." (I'm performing one this Saturday. We had one last month at a Bed & Breakfast, too, an Englishman. Man, I am REALLY enjoying Christianity, you?)

Regardless of one's stance on demons and exorcisms, on that same video cassette, a friend included a segment from the 700 Club, a Pat Robertson interview with author James Rutz about his new book, "Megashift." When my wife and I watched it, I was spellbound. After listening to Rutz, I ran upstairs to read what I could about his book on-line, my wife following close behind. I found this quote, "If you read one 'Christian book' this year, make it 'Megashift' by Jim Rutz." -- Joseph Farah, founder of WorldNetDaily

Another book review read as follows: "The 1700-year nightmare is over. A megashift of spiritual power into the hands of ordinary people is about to overwhelm the world and put it into vastly better shape. Prepare yourself to take part in a total makeover of Planet Earth!"

It went on to say: "You are about to discover a new world where...

* Over a billion non-Christians may become highly active Christians in the next dozen years.

* A whole new form of Christianity promises to bring a far greater impact than the Protestant Reformation.

* Millions of ordinary people are doing miracles.

* God has brought hundreds ofpeople back from the dead, mostly in the last 15 years. These are not near-death experiences, but real resurrections of actual corpses. (NOTE: It's true. In the last decade, 52 countries report dead being raised and diseases miraculously cured.)

"New book tells all: "Megashift" not only documents a wide range of miracles, but also spotlights hundreds of thousands of house-church teams around the globe that are producing a new culture of responsible freedom. In these teams, people are allowed to speak and interact. They often form deep friendships, dump their heaviest problems, turn into free and powerful spearheads of worldwide change, and get connected with God and man in ways that almost defy description. This is a "Megashift" away from spectator religion.

Funniest thing, in the early 90's, Rutz was sharing this vision and, when some men from my church attended a meeting of his, they laughed at his odd notions. Many did the same.

Now, we're buying his books.

A GROWING OPPORTUNITY: 8% CHURCH GROWTH PER YEAR!

My home town boasts a community growth rate of about 3% annually; the local college, about 7% per year. This is for perspective. One item mentioned in Megashift was this: "There is a hidden world that already has 707 million evangelical/charismatic Christians who are growing by an incredible 8% a year. In the center of this shockwave are roughly 100 million in informal networks of committed circles who run their own show without buildings, paid pastors, or sermons. "Megashift" is a startling introduction to that surge of grass roots power and love, which is forming the culture you will soon live in."

It appears God is using the rank and file, willing Believers across the globe, more and more these days, and OUTSIDE the friendly confines of Churchianity at that! Rutz mentioned having met a 7-year old boy in India who died at age 5. The boy had scars from where he was burned by a power line. On the emergency room table for two hours, doctors could not revive him. The hospital contacted a church which called a 60-year old Indian woman to pray for the boy. She was illiterate; an "untouchable"; the lowest of the low in the Indian caste system. She prayed until 4 AM. The boy was alive with no brain damage or any other physical problems. When Rutz asked the woman if she had ever done this before, she replied that she had been involved in sixteen resurrections!

"The Church, as we have it set up now...is really not set up to handle it all so God is empowering people to work through small teams, house churches particularly, school churches, business churches and so forth...small teams where people are able to interact and work with each other...kind of like the early New Testament idea of going house to house...," Rutz said.

Are you ready? Church leaders, is your Church infrastructure in place, or are you expecting these young people to come to Church, learn the prayers and hymns and when to say 'Amen" and listen while you teach them where to sit, how to act...and expect them to do so for the next 70 years?

Sorry, but as one who has spent many years with teens and collegians in ministry, these young lions gotta roar!

Me? I contend that, not only are these pierced 'n tattooed, navel-flashing, latch-key kids our latest raw recruits but that America's corporate offices are going to be the place of another huge move of God as well. Such things HAVE to be so because we spend so much time there. Is the Church going to meet them where they're at, or cling to its pews - those medieval torcher devices - with both hands, serving the Institution rather than the Institutor? Just as Aquila and Priscilla were there, strategically in place to greet the Apostle Paul after his Damascus Road conversion, will you be there for these kids when they need you to be? Again, I'm NOT talking about greeting them at the door of a church building - I may be talking about going to their campus, joining forces with other denominations and pooling funds for a youth event (we organized one that included 26 churches, 9 bands and over 1,000 kids) or starting a Coffee Shop Bible study where they can relax and be themselves.

Anything to show them that you LOVE (spelled T-I-M-E) them.

I met with 30 people around a campfire a few weeks ago here at my home in the woods. We cooked steaks and chicken and sang with guitars. We prayed about revival, too. People, we were BEING the Church and no less than 5 denominations were represented there. This past weekend, we knocked on doors throughout the county and prayed for people at their doorsteps - Lutheran alongside Baptist alongside Pentecostal alongside Church of the Nazarene. Eleven denominations in all, taking our town by storm for the third time (we're going out again in mid-September)[as i re-read this dated article, we hare about to go out our fourth time and have already prayed at 30,000 doorsteps]. Though it may appear that Satan has strategically managed to make workaholics out of us and has systematically drawn millions of mommies out of their homes in an effort to join the workforce, thereby creating legions of latch-key kids, the TRUTH is that our God WILL get His Church back (I'm not talking buildings, folks). God WILL have His way. Satan ALWAYS shoots himself in the foot.

Be a part of this upcoming revival. It's not going to look like anything any of us have ever seen.

Medieval II - Total War Expansion Pack Announced

This is a review of the new expansion pack for Medieval II Total War which came from the upbeat review given by Gamespot.com.

Sega released Medieval II Total War around four months ago which is the newest game in the Medieval series. The object of the game is to gain control of Europe during the time of the middle ages through the use of massive battles using individually control soldiers.

Medieval II Total War gained many positive reviews including the assessment from Gamespot where the original article resides. Medieval II Total War War earned sales comparable to the smash hits The Sims 2 and World of Warcraft.

On Tuesday April 3rd Sega announced the first expansion pack for Medieval II Total War, Medieval II Total War Kingdoms which will append the original game with four new single player campaigns including:

"--The Americas, which casts players as Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés or the Aztec and other indigenous peoples who resisted his ruthless conquest of Mexico.

--The Teutonic Wars, which saw Christians and pagan tribes clash violently in Northern Europe.

--Britannia, which sees five factions fight for control of the British Isles.

--An expanded Crusades Campaign, which sees new opponents enter the infamous series of Christian-versus-Saracen conflicts."

Beside the single player campaigns, Medieval II Total War Kingdoms has six new multilayer campaigns and 20 new custom battle maps to play with. It also has thirteen new political factions and 150 plus units as well to add to the existingly large world of Medieval II Total War.

The expansion pack should prove to add to the already smash hit Medieval II Total War, the expansion pack is due to be release to Europe and the US this Fall.

Online School Or Home School? Before Shelling Out For a Virtual Academy, Consider the Whole Package

With online virtual academies becoming more common, you may have asked yourself, "Is it possible for children to receive a proper education online?" My opinion may differ from others, but I have researched several online schools, through their websites, and formed some generalizations which I think should be understood before enrolling any student. This article is not meant to be a review of any particular school, but rather a summary of common characteristics I have found among several online schools. The schools you consider may differ in their teaching approaches and practices. Consumers should always fully research any school, whether brick-and-mortar, or virtual, before enrolling their children. Of course deciding whether an online education is right for your child is a decision you and your child should make together. However, I recommend some alternatives to consider before enrolling your child in an online school. The generalizations and alternatives I found are listed below.

School can be broken down into its basic components, which, in the author's opinion, includes four things;

1. Teacher-student interaction

2. Curriculum

3. Student-student interaction and

4. Feedback (Grading).

Let's examine each of these components and how each are implemented within a typical online program

1. Teacher-student interaction (instruction). Most online schools do not offer real-time teacher-led instruction. Instead, they provide curriculum materials which should be reviewed and studied independently by the student. The student subsequently submits the materials for grading, and receives a response from the teacher. Most programs offer some form of tutoring by the teacher via e-mail or chat. Most programs are asynchronous (student and teacher not together at the same time.) This offers the advantage of a more flexible schedule where a student can participate in other activities or programs and complete lessons and assignments at differing schedules. The disadvantage, however, is that the program may seem impersonal, resembling strongly old-fashioned correspondence courses. Many students become discouraged from this type of instruction, where others may enjoy the flexibility. The key to success in this type of program, especially for younger students, is strong parental support. Parents should expect to keep kids on track by overseeing lessons, and even assisting if need be. Some programs offer a real-time chat as a substitute for scheduled live lessons. In the real-time chat, students and teacher meet synchronously (at the same time) in a chat room and the students are allowed to ask questions and receive a response. This provides an advantage of live interaction with other people, but the chat should have a "whiteboard" available so that the teacher can clearly illustrate concepts, especially for math and science courses.

2. The next part of any school is its chosen curriculum. Of course, many parents have religious preferences and there is an abundance of curricula out there to support most choices, especially if the family is Christian. For many parents, this is the primary factor driving them to choose a private education for their children. Parents should be certain that the curriculum can be tailored to each students needs, and that it meets standards for their state. It is a good idea to be certain that the student will receive the required state-mandated coursework before choosing a school, because, especially for the high school courses, they may discover too late that the student has not met state requirements for graduation. The good news is that most curricula are tailored to meet state standards, and the parent has little need for concern here. Special needs students are often exempt from these requirements and can benefit from a custom-tailored program that can be chosen in a virtual school. Parents should be cautious, however, when enrolling children in higher-level coursework. Be certain that tutoring is available as part of the program, with a "whiteboard" in the classroom chat. If this option is not available, I would recommend that consumers shy away from these types of programs, as the parent may find himself or herself spending extra money for private tutoring, which defeats the purpose of paying for the virtual education in the first place.

3. Student-student interaction or socialization. We've all heard so much about socialization. What is all of the hype really about, and is it relevant to online education? The answer is yes, yes, and yes. People need other people, and those taking online courses can feel very isolated. Most virtual schools offer students the opportunity to interact with each other in an online chat. Some even offer a "virtual world" which resembles a real school campus in a video game type of environment. Students who enjoy playing video games may benefit from the latter option. Parents should be certain that they have time to support their children's educational needs with outside activities like sports, clubs, etc. There are usually home school groups in any area and those attending a virtual school would certainly find themselves in like company at these meetings. Consider finding a local chapter and getting involved. Students who meet regularly with other students in the area will feel like part of a group in much the same way as those attending a regular school. Students who sit home alone all day will most certainly suffer from the isolation.

4. The final component necessary to any basic educational program is teacher feedback or grading. This component is critical so that the student knows how well he or she is doing in the program, and which areas of study may need work. Virtual programs may offer immediate feedback for curriculum components which may be graded automatically. There should certainly be some live input, however. Parents should ask whether lessons receiving a poor grade may be repeated. Sometimes computerized grading systems can be less that foolproof and a live teacher should be available and willing to review even the computerized answers. Be certain to ask about this critical area of the program.

Parents have quite a few options when considering an online program, and it is possible to find one that fits you and your student exactly. Many students and parents are happy with this educational option. These people find that an online program helps to keep them on track and provides the support they need for more difficult or time-consuming subjects.

Parents who are considering this option may sell themselves short, however, if they do not consider homeschooling their children instead of purchasing an online education. Many virtual schools utilize the exact same curriculum options that are available to home schoolers. Several of these curricula are considered to be "self-teaching," meaning that each lesson is carefully planned and presented in a package that builds on information previously learned, but does not require the student to review or refer to that material to complete the lesson. Several "curriculum-in-a-box" options are available to home schooled students which offer a complete 5-subject set for each level. Electives are also available. Those considering virtual education may consider using one of these curricula coupled with outside tutoring services when necessary. There are several of these curriculum options available to homeschooling families, and a comparison is beyond the scope of this article. Since the parent will find him/herself monitoring and guiding daily student lessons and activities with either choice, some students may better succeed in a homeschooling program which offers direct tutoring support rather than impersonal online interaction. Money saved from not purchasing the virtual school program can be used for funding the tutoring services. If the parents feel comfortable answering most questions themselves, rather than hiring a tutor, further financial benefit can be realized from the homeschooling option.

Of course, parents should always refer to local and/or state homeschooling regulations. If homeschooling is chosen, parents are required to register their student with a regulating authority. This is also required in some states if a virtual school option is chosen. In some states students are allowed to register with the virtual school only.

Congratulations on your choice of seeking an alternative educational setting for your child! Whichever program you choose, make sure it offers the benefits and support you need as a family to achieve success. I wish you success in whatever choice you make together.

How To Improve Your Quality of Life by Using the Seven Moments - Introduction

"This is a multi-part article submission with excerpts directly from my book Life: The Seven Moments that really matter. Enjoy. - Christian Blake."

Preface

During the summer of 2000, I began an eighteen-month, in-depth study of the highest grossing blockbusters produced during the 90's. My goal was to comprehend what compels people to spend their money at the box office. Why? Because as a screenwriter, I wanted a piece of that billion dollar industry. And what better way to learn how to write a screenplay than by studying successful movies.

I was certain that every great film had underlying mechanics at play and I was determined to be the first to discover them. I wanted to know to what, specifically, the audience responded. After eighteen months of dedicated movie watching, I found the answers.

My commitment to film study was pretty intense at that time. I worked only two or three days a week which was enough to pay my rent, pay the utilities, and buy a few groceries. The rest of my time, I watched movies. Sometimes five a day. I watched several over a hundred times each. While I watched these films, I would dictate every action and every bit of dialogue from each character. I would later review these notes and try to decipher why was this movie a success? Why was this one a hit and that other one a dud? Eventually I did discover what makes a great movie great, and what I learned also applied to life.

There are seven moments in life that matter the most to us. Once you understand these seven moments and actively appreciate them when they occur, you will instantly elevate your enjoyment of life. These moments have always been right in front of us, yet nobody has ever brought them to our attention.

You don't need money to live a fulfilling life. In fact, you don't need a job. You don't need a wife, a husband, or a family. You don't even need a car. A fulfilling life has nothing to do with these things.

I imagine some of you are doubting me already...but I'll prove it. Have you ever experienced a day where you finally came home and slumped into a recliner at the end of a long, busy day and thought to yourself, "Wow....what a great day!"? Then you went to bed entirely content and "maxed out" from the day's events? Everyone has felt that way at one time or another, yet not everyone has the same possessions. You felt great because of what you experienced over the course of the day, not because of what you own, your status symbol, or how much money you earned. The experiences themselves gave you that sense of contentment.

The seven moments are easy to comprehend. At first you might not believe how easy it is to use them to enhance your daily life. Over time, however, you will prove to yourself that these moments are occurring every single day. You are already experiencing them...everyone is. All I'm going to do is show you how to recognize them. Expose them. Once you realize what they are, you will inevitably realize how powerful they are, all seven of them; and then you can immediately improve the quality of your life.

Sedated

I've been sedated for a large portion of my life. If you're an American, chances are high that you are too. In fact, I'd liken us Americans to zombies. The walking American dead. Our human spirit has been lulled to sleep. We seek external visual nourishment for our human spirit rather than experiencing it firsthand for ourselves.

The vast majority of us go to work every day. We have our morning routines, our lunch time rituals, and our evening relaxation at home before we go to bed, all this so we can get up and do it all over again. Most people will never escape the daytime work environment. As you will read later in this book, work is an excellent source of nourishment for the human spirit. But what do we do with our time after work?

Television

When we get home from work, most of us plop down on the couch and turn on the television to watch actors live a simulated life that is more enriching than our own. We follow these television dramas, comedies, and mysteries because they are feeding our human spirit better than we are feeding ourselves. We live through television. What is inside these television shows that appeals to us? What is missing in our own lives?

Sports

We attach ourselves to great athletes. We admire them. We cheer for them. We follow their careers and debate over who is the better competitor. We watch these superstars compete all season long, and then we get excited over "the big game" when the best players battle against each other for the championship title. What are they doing that compels us to watch? What can we do to satisfy this need of ours by changing the things we do every day?

Video Games

The video game craze is stronger than ever. According to The Entertainment Software Association, the average game player spends 23.4 hours a week playing video games. That's a lot of time spent in front of the computer or television. For the rest of Americans that don't, it's very hard to understand why kids (and adults) devote so much of their life to video games.

Watching television programs, playing video games, or following an athlete's career are perfect examples of neglecting our own human spirit. We are no longer actively participating in our own lives and have become spectators of other people living a simulated life. We are satisfying our needs by watching someone else live the moments that human nature requires us to experience. I have not had cable television for over five years. I have no need for it. If I need the news, I get it from the internet; or I buy a newspaper. My life is filled with the seven moments that I generate in real life, rather than watching someone else live the seven moments on a television show.

If indeed we are asleep and neglecting our own personal involvement in life, how can we get back on track? How can we start experiencing life instead of watching someone else live?

By sharing what I have learned, I am positive that you will be able to increase your daily enjoyment of life by making new choices throughout your day. You can immediately start generating these moments within your own life. At the same time, you can decrease the amount of time you spend watching someone else live. Believe me, life is far more interesting when you experience the seven moments firsthand.

Read this book. Put its principles into action. I promise you it will be a painless experience. It doesn't matter who you are, where you live, or how much money you have. You can be broke. You can be homeless. You can be a bored gazillionaire. You can be stuck in a dead-end job working 40 hours a week with debt over your head and no hope for financial freedom for another forty years. Awakening your human spirit and feeling alive again can happen in the next few hours. This book will show you how. Start now, and start living again.

The next part of this article series is titled, How To Improve Your Quality of Life by using the Seven Moments - Moment #1.

Christian Blake first discovered the Seven Moments in 2001 and has since written two books on the subject. One is written for the general public: how to be happy when you can't have what you want in life, and the other is geared towards entertainment; specifically teaching screen writers how to write a great movie script. If you prefer to read more of Christian Blake's general writing, please visit Orange County Writer.

Peace in the Storm by Deirdre Kelley - A Book Review

Peace in the Storm by author Deirdre Kelley tells the often traumatic story of divorce from a drug addicted and abusive spouse. We meet Amy Alexander as she walks away from the courthouse and the battle to save her marriage. She is free of the violence and fear of her husband, Brandon. However she can't help worrying about her future and whether she is strong enough to make it on her own and take care of her two sons.

Over the next several chapters we learn about how Amy's children deal with an absent father and their memories of how Brandon hurt their mother mentally and physically. Fifteen-year-old Marshall seems to be the perfect son and student; hard working, mature, understanding, a good Christian teen. He steps into his new role as man of the house and is glad his mother no longer has to endure the bruises and the fighting. Like most seven-year-olds, Sean loves video games and playing with his friends. He struggles with the belief that since his father doesn't visit, and yelled at him for no reason, that his father must hate him.

Peace in the Storm is well written with good character development and believable dialogue. Deirdre Kelley does a good job showing the stress and fear involved when dealing with a violent, unpredictable ex-husband. She also draws a clear picture of the joy of a new beginning, of rebuilding and reaching out to help others. Throughout her struggles, Amy discovers a great strength in prayer and the new friends she makes along the way. Just when you think the Alexander family will be okay, Brandon begins harassing and threatening the family for money to support his and his girlfriend's drug habit, culminating with Sean's disappearance one day after school.

Peace in the Storm is a wonderful work of Christian fiction. I understand that in difficult times, many people lean on their faith for direction. However, I occasionally felt the religious passages pulled me from this otherwise interesting story. I recommend Peace in the Storm to those who enjoy stories of faith-inspired strength and survival. I hope to read more from

How to Combat The Media's Influence On Our Children

This is not your typical parenting article that shares "survival tips", or the best DVD's and activities to fight boredom. Rather, I'm going to share practical principles and techniques for raising spiritually, mentally and emotionally healthy children. The neat thing is that you have complete control over the effectiveness of the techniques, they cost you nothing, and you can test them out in the comfort of your own home. Sound good? Then, keep reading.

Did you know that the U.S. media landscape is dominated by a core group of giant corporations that, through a history of mergers and acquisitions, have gained control over much of what we see, hear and read? In many cases these giant companies are integrated, manufacturing everything from books, movies, music and more.

Listen to this, the Columbia Journalism Review reports that the same company that owns and controls the programming for "MTV" and "BET", is also responsible for "Nickelodeon", "Nick Jr.", and "Noggin". (Source: Columbia Journalism Review, http://www.cjr.org)

Think about it. A popular trend has emerged, where the music careers of young stars are launched on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. The songs and videos usually start out innocently enough. Then what happens? We see them transition to MTV, where the songs become a little more risqué and the lyrics become a lot less innocent. By then, however, our children have already fallen in love with these young stars. So, what can you do?

Does this mean that you should ban all of your children's favorite television shows? No. I'm not suggesting that you toss the television out the window, although that may be a good idea. Instead, I want to provoke you to consider how important it is to be prayerful, diligent and informed in order to shield your children from negative influences that can harm their spiritual, mental and emotional well-being.

Here are a few ways you can become more involved in their daily activities. When your children are viewing certain programs, take time to watch. You may be surprised at the types of things you see. As you observe, ask yourself, "What is being depicted in this cartoon or movie? What are the characters wearing, saying and doing?" Sometimes sexual innuendo, rebellion against authority, and other inappropriate behavior is being portrayed. These subtle, yet unhealthy influences send subliminal messages to your children and mold their subconscious mind.

If a movie is rated PG-13, even if it's animated and has received rave reviews from the critics, still ask yourself "Is this appropriate for my child?" Think about it. Animated movies gross millions of dollars at the box office, because children's entertainment is big business. The goal now is to entertain both the parents and the children; as a result, the children are influenced by sexually explicit content, vulgarity, profanity and violence, all cloaked as "entertainment that's fun for the whole family."

Remember, everything planted inside your children is a seed, and seeds grow, whether bad or good. Children are like sponges, soaking up everything around them. As a parent, you act as the sanitizing agent, filtering out anything that will defile and harm them. Don't be afraid to turn the television off, or ban particular programs from being viewed in your home. These decisions are not always easy or popular, but they are necessary to protect the innocence of your children.

Be warned. Family and friends will not always smile upon your decision to sterilize your children's environment. You will sometimes be perceived as "overly protective" and "a little over the top." I know it's no fun to be viewed as a prude, and few parents enjoy being labeled "strict," but if you go the extra mile to provide your children with discipline and boundaries, you will build Godly character in them that will pay off in the long run. You must make the decision that Joshua made and declare that, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)

Think about this. You don't have a long time to remain the primary influence in your children's lives. Pretty soon, they'll leave home. This is when they'll depend on what you taught them in their formative years to make the right decisions. Do you really want television shows, video games and pop culture icons to be the strongest influences on their choices?

God chose you specifically as the steward over your precious children. Remain prayerful, submitted, and open to God's will. Trust Him, and He will equip you with all the necessary tools to raise Holy, happy and healthy kids. "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:6)

Geek - Now Chic For Women Who Love Technology

The rise in super sleek technology has made cell phones and i-pods as much of an accessory as a designer handbag.

Technology for women is big business as companies scramble to meet the demand of ultra-chic products targeted to women. Online stores like , CharmedGirlOnline, brings fashionable women's technology products together in one place to please savvy shoppers seeking the latest , most stylish technology products and accessories.

"We try our best to provide a one-stop shop for women's technology products like i-pods and cell phones in fashionable colors and styles," said founder Felicia Johnson. "Many of our technology accessories are in high demand by women who look at their technology purchases the same way as the purchase of their Christian Louboutins."

Sites like geeksugar are forming online communities where these women can review and discuss the latest in technology all in a woman-friendly environment. Even video game makers like Nintendo are offering games options like the Wii fit and making sure they have games that are appealing to girls and women. The site Grrlgamer.com caters to this trend and makes sure that girl who loves video games have an information-laden forum in a world that has typically ignored them.

With geek fast becoming chic, the importance of creating technology with women in mind is essential for technology companies trying to separate themselves from the black and white boredom of typical technology products. New colors and thin, more attractive styling and games that reflect feminine style and values ranks up there with functionality when marketing to style-conscious women.

Publicity and Publishing Today - The Battle Between Old School Versus New School

Those Golden Days of Publishing are Gone!

In the golden days, an author would secure a book deal through an agent, publish the book, go on tour escorted by the publicist or media escort - and if they scored enough publicity, they'd become a "best selling" author.

Or at the very least, the author's book sales would cover the tour, pay back the advance and make the publisher some money. Profit was the name of the game - and the system was working - until about 2005.

Suddenly bookstores, media properties and publishing houses began to crumble. The internet was the "game changer" and the traditional book publishing and promotion process have become ineffective.

Up until this point, the world wide web was for those techy-geeky folks and had no real impact on book sales. But now Amazon.com, print-on-demand, viral marketing messages, social media and powerful online communities have leveled the playing field.

Bookstores, agents, fat clunky press kits and publicists scoring traditional media are not the keys to an author's success anymore.

There are tons of self-published or independent books that have made history - and surprised the publishing world. Like The Shack, a Christian novel by William P. Young was originally self-published in 2005. And as of February 2010, over seven million copies in print worldwide, spent seventy weeks holding the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list, and it continues to remain in the top ten to date.

The success of The Shack demonstrates what word-of-mouth and community networking can do for a self-published book, but more interestingly, the market strength of religious books in the United States, within and without the book publishing industry.

So let's compare old school and new school way of doing things:

Old School: Traditional hard and soft-cover books

New School: Digital books, ebooks, Kindles, iPad and other wireless reading devices are on the way!

Old School: Book tours

New School: Blog tours & webinars

Old School: Getting reviews in magazines and newspapers

New School: Getting reviews on Amazon and in book communities where readers hang out like Shelfari, goodreads, librarything.com, rawsistaz and more

Old School: Web 1.0 (webmasters needed for HTML and complicated stuff)

New School: Web 2.0 (freedom - just a blogger blog or WordPress.com blog) Two-way communication!

Old School: Mailing out ARCs, books and big press kits

New School: EPK(electronic press kits) and ebooks

Old School: Media Escort

New School: Virtual Assistant

Old School: Press releases emailed and mailed to media

New School: SEO press releases sent or using online media matching service like Pitch Rate or Reporter Connection

Old School: Printing, stamping and mailing newsletters to mailing list accumulated over the years

New School: Sending out eNewsletters & continual email marketing campaigns using autoresponders and broadcast emails

Old School: Creating & updating media lists

New School: Capturing emails of interested readers using an "opt-in" database program like AWeber

Old School: TV interviews

New School: Creating book trailers, viral videos and streaming LIVE online

Old School: Authors visiting reading groups and libraries

New School: Teleconferencing or streaming live to many groups at the same time from the comfort of your home via Skype or a bridge line

Old School: Postcard mailings to readers, bookstores and organizations

New School: Eblast postcard to thousands using email marketing services like Goodgirlbookclub, BlackGospelPromo, ChristianPRGroup or DetroitGospel

Old School: Radio Interviews

New School: Podcasts and internet radio shows (heard online or downloaded via itunes)

Old School: Magazine features

New School: Ezine Features

Old School: Writing a column in newspapers

New School: Syndicated articles submitted on article directories like Ezine using keywords and generating web traffic or writing a regular blog

Old School: Stigma that self-published books "didn't cut it" and that's why they're not with a major house

New School: Savvy self-published authors are doing it big, getting noticed, making money and living a successful career doing what they love - writing!

Old School: Generating publicity in media outlets and getting no immediate input from audiences

New School: Building relationships, getting direct response from readers and creating communities online

Old School: Getting radio, TV, Newspaper and magazine reviews

New School: Creating thousands of followers, friends and fans online who interact with you and are connected with you through your whole career

Vampire Weekend Review - Contra

BAND NAME: Vampire Weekend

LP TITLE: Contra

LABEL: XL Recordings

TRACKS: 10

YOUR RATING: 7.5/10

The modern day rock star job description states that, one must look, sound and act like ridiculous, pretentious caricatures of themselves, at all times. Some have a deep, rudimentary understanding of this way of life, and succumb to tabloid wishes by refusing to drive unless thoroughly intoxicated, and living by the maxim of, "this aint a party until I get kicked out of the club for either engaging in a vicious brawl, or being in possession of class A narcotics." Others, like many self-proclaimed rappers, were born ludicrous and so arrogant, that they had to become famous and widely revered, to avoid imploding in a blaze of impotent self-hatred.

Enter Vampire Weekend: a New York quartet who completely contradict the aforementioned rock star ideals of addiction, self-absorption and lunacy. Instead of fast cars and cocaine, the members of Vampire Weekend commute on bicycles and indulge in gourmet French cuisine. Instead of diamond-encrusted jewellery that probably cost more than the average consumer's yearly income, Vampire Weekend prefers loafers and pastel sweaters. And instead of songs about drugs and promiscuous sex, Vampire Weekend sings about punctuation, classical architecture, higher education and post-modern society. But their debut record has reached gold status, their photo has adorned numerous international music magazines, and the band has performed at some of the most prestigious locations in the world. So without a doubt the boys of Vampire Weekend are as much rock stars as any cocaine snorting, fast-car driving, attention seeking deadbeat.

Ask any band and they will tell you that their second album is always steeped in scepticism and incredulity. It seems to be an unspeakable curse that the second record should often be a disappointment and merely a hurdle to get to album number three and beyond. A few daring artists have attempted to leap from debut to third album, but unfortunately they realised a second album is inevitable, and avoiding it is about as easy as unbending a corkscrew via telekinesis. Though The John Butler Trio ingeniously found a way of avoiding the second album debacle, by entitling their sophomore release Three - the album went platinum.

Now Vampire Weekend's Contra, not only suffers from second album syndrome, but also has to deal with being a follow up to one of the most blogged-over, hyped up and successful debuts ever released in the 21st century music scene. After such an incredible first album, the expectation surrounding Vampire Weekend's second release was suffocating - the public were expecting something great, and if Vampire Weekend did not deliver at least an equally admirable second release, they faced industry pariahdom. Most other bands would have been slightly derailed by the hype accompanying their eponymous debut and the sheer weight of expectation and pressure heaped onto their second album. But it's quite clear by now that Vampire Weekend is not most other bands, and that they play by their own set of rules. And if anyone can overcome the aged curse of the sophomore slump, then Ezra Koenig and his band of educated over-achievers, most certainly can.

Contra is a more mature, more diverse and simply more substantial (despite clocking in at 36 minutes) album that shows an emotional depth not present on the band's debut. The opening run of songs is characterized by a soft and wide-eyed melodic gracefulness. "Horchata" harnesses a gentle calypso beat to evoke a nostalgic reverie. Front man and lyricist Ezra Koenig rhymes horchata (which is a Mexican beverage) with balaclava, Aranciata and then Masada. "White Sky" is a multi-textured Afro-pop joy - a stirring homage to the Manhattan skyline, surpassing any other musical intricacies found on their debut. Yet all albums have their low points and on Contra it is tracks three and four. "Holiday," a rather mainstream ska-pop workout attempts to re-capture the light-hearted vigour of numbers such as "M79" and "A-Punk," but without the customary elan. And "California English," the band's ironic approach to auto-tune, ends up being a sonic farce, which is, confusing, irritating and entirely skippable. But on the whole Contra delivers. It will surely please Vampire Weekend fans, but will probably not turn naysayers into believers.

Because of its eclecticism, the appeal of Contra is relatively limited to a small group of listeners. People who enjoy music that has lyrics that may require a dictionary to decipher; music that features rhythms from around the world - in short, Vampire Weekend appeals to an audience of intelligent, cultured and possibly affluent individuals. So if one tried to introduce Vampire Weekend to, say a classic rock or hip-hop fan, it would be similar to attempting to explain existential beliefs to a born-again Christian.

What Mr. Koenig really has strived to achieve with Contra is the respect of cynics and sceptics who unfairly dismissed Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut as a over-ambitious imitation of Paul Simon's Graceland, penned by a crew of post-collegiates far too convinced that they're clever and quirky, with a presumably superficial understanding of the African sounds they were stealing. The band's preppy smugness undoubtedly rubbed many people the wrong way. But instead of trying to live it down, Vampire Weekend quite wisely chose instead to live it up.

Vampire Weekend seem more prepared this time around. Yes their tracks are still imbued with Afro-Pop rhythms, but with Contra these tribal beats meld seamlessly with Rostam Batmanglij's synthesizers and guitar lines and sound right at home. Instead of using African music as a gimmick to sound different from the status quo, the band uses the rhythms to enhance and enrich their songs. Filled with new ideas, yet altogether familiar at the same time, Contra is no radical leap in any new direction, but rather a calculated step towards a maturity and precision that only comes with time.

Vampire Weekend is the thinking man's band. Ezra writes lyrics that would serve him very well in a game of Scrabble - they would be cloying if not sung with such relish. And Vampire Weekend is the rich man's band. With music videos that are often mistaken for Ralph Lauren commercials, Vampire Weekend wear their affluence and privilege on their sleeve, and though often delving into the pretentiousness and self-parody, they do not attempt to conceal their Ivy League smugness which I suppose is commendable. Vampire Weekend is also the cultured man's band - drawing influence from African tribal rhythms, Mexican Mariachi beats, and Caribbean grooves. And you see, this is why Vampire Weekend is so good. They play what they know, and do it so well. Yes they are smart, rich and privileged white boys, but they don't try to hide it.

There will always be haters and cynics, but based on the success, both critical and commercial, of their first two albums, there doesn't appear to be a tangible limit to what future splendour the boys of Vampire Weekend may achieve.

What is so special, in addition to a number of great-looking screen shots? Actually I don't know. But something about it inspired us, and that it is difficult to pin down in words. But you can Try.

The past few months several games have been released, which also shown some great artwork (Soma playing someone?). Visual references these games suggests strongly that developers Christian Game still grow and mature in the Venture's manufacturing used Unreal engine 3.and it shows.

So back to what Adam Venture is all about. This is the Assembly theme Adventure game set in a runner, setting similar to "Raiders of the Lost Ark".Iceberg, game publisher, describes it as-offering ltownej game that has "action-oriented gameplay" filled with puzzles.

The iceberg, "while playing you can encounter of excerpts from the Bible and, through various puzzles, learn about common Christian values."

Now this isn't running with guns blazing Laura Croft. This is a straight up adventure.Act without violence … what a concept. This is episode one and if commercial success is, you can bet there will be many more such future episodes.

We can't wait to get our hands on this game if it plays well, as it looks, we are in for a treat. Below is a summary of what you can expect from the game.

Storyline:

Deciphering the relics in old Church Templar, Adam reveals memories long ago written by crusader who fought with Richard Lion heart in the Holy lands.Memories of labyrinths say mysterious caves and grottos headwaters four great rivers. First episodic series non violent play games involving. Rich storyline weaves classical adventure with overtones. — biblical interaction with objects and use fast twitch skills really absorb yourself in challenging puzzles and atmosphere. action oriented game play brings the entire depth and feel to the adventure genre.

Looking for developers:

Vertigo games is barely a year old. They do not present themselves as a Christian Game, but is sure Tribeca Christian in place. In addition to the Venture's also place outside app iPhone called, "What Would Jesus Say?"

Fortunately we were able to ask a few questions and we think you'll enjoy their response.

CG: Adam found his venture to our email, we had no idea that iceberg or Vertigo games have been working on this type of game. Please introduce yourself, where you can come, what makes you unique and hope to achieve in Christian marketplace.
My name is Richard Stitselaar, Creative Director of Vertigo games, Dutch studio games located in the city of Rotterdam. our company was founded when encoded Illusions of our former employer, got seriously affected by the financial crisis.Coded Illusions have been working on the title of Christian themed AAA for more than three years, and with Vertigo Games, we are trying to build on this experience. Our ambition Is to create high quality gaming and raise the bar for the Christian market.

CG: what is Adam Venture all around? Why did this theme?
I would say, Adam First episode venture is all about Temptation and struggle to overcome it.This universal theme resonates throughout the story to create the book of Genesis, which was the main inspiration for the story and puzzles for the episode, however, we tried to incorporate a theme to a subtle way, avoiding approach "in your face" benefit from "reading between the lines".

CG: venture clearly raises Significantly Adams quality graphics (and animation) in Christian oriented game, what did it take to reach As many developers were? involved in making this game?
As usual, had a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Although in our case was mainly sweat. First episode was created while playing Vertigo was still growing as a company, so we called
in a lot of aid on the basis of our work for hire. Guess I, around 30 people contributed to the creation of one way or another, 8 of them are internal.

CG: do you have themes for future episodes planned? if so, what are they?
Adam Venture episodes will be released in a series of three, therefore every series reveals the complete story main storyline of the first three episodes actually was taken, but unfortunately I'm not yet at liberty to discuss the other two episodes one And mention is that regardless of the theme can we choose the Biblical reference values and family remains constant throughout the series.

CG: What other games that fall could well do Christian Market you have planned? I'm talking about the games please theme with content that is of interest to Christians?
Certainly we have left a few tricks up our sleeves; one of them is a sci-fi adventure, called "Nomos", which is inspired by the book of Revelations. Now Adam Venture series tracks us pretty occupied like. we see a that it is important to create subsequent episodes at regular intervals, while making sure that you are constantly improving, we ourselves trying to balance those forces. contradicting usually us pretty busy.

So there you have it, we are excited about Adam. Venture and pleased to find yet another studio dedicated to raising the level of excellence around Christian games. Future looking bright indeed.
